The Soviet Union and the U.S. were in a tight battle for space supremacy during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Soviet Union already claimed a number of firsts. First satellite in space with Sputnik 1 in 1957, Yuri Gagarian was the first man in space in 1961,but NASA was closing the gap. While Alexei Leonov became the first person to complete a spacewalk on March 18, 1965, an American astronaut, Edward White, completed the same feat June 3, 1965.
