Tour De France 2011: 1st Week Highlights
The world's most important bike race, the Tour de France, is on it's first rest day. The perfect time for us to review the first week of this momentous event. The first week of racing was all about who crashed and who didn't. Never before has a starting week produced so much drama. Some serious riders have had to abandon the race due to injuries sustained after crashing hard onto the tarmac. Wiggins, Boonen, Vinokourov, Van den Broeck, Brajkovic, Garate, Willems, Zabriski, all of them done and dusted for this year's Tour. Plenty more riders have sustained injuries through crashes, but are trying to carry on despite of them. Johnny Hoogerland is one of those riders. His story is probably the most amazing of the first week after being driven off the road into some barbed wire by a France Television car in yesterday's stage. Hoogerland finished the stage to hang on to his King of the Mountains jersey, but needed 33 stitches to close all his cuts and gashes. Hopefully the rest day does him good. Tomorrow the first serious mountains beckon and this is where it all starts for the GC riders. We wish them luck.
